AIDS Task Force

Our Mission Statement: “As a Christian response to the human pain and suffering caused by AIDS, Grace UMC affirms a ministry that offers unconditional love and compassion to all those whose lives are touched by AIDS.” Affirmed by Church Council, 1990

Who we are:  Grace United Methodist Church is committed to its mission supporting those living with  HIV – AIDS.  To that end, Grace Church created out of our Missions Outreach Ministry an AIDS Task Force almost 30 years ago. While there have been significant achievements in medical treatment and support services, we cannot become complacent about the severity and scope of the HIV / AIDS epidemic in our communities and throughout the world.

What we do:  Promote awareness of the continued impact of HIV / AIDS epidemic in our local, national, and global communities.  Provide financial support for programs serving individuals suffering from  HIV – AIDS.

How We Do It:

Educational Events:  Collaborating with the Baltimore Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church and the Board of Global Ministries, the Task Force holds forums, pot-luck dinners with service provider guests, and other educational events to raise interest and awareness.  Partners include the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Institute of Human Virology, Jacques Initiative, Moveable Feast, AIRS’ Quality of Life Retreats, State and Local Departments of Health, faith communities, etc.

Awareness is also promoted by providing displays of materials offering health care / service provider information related to HIV / AIDS on our AIDS Task Force Bulletin Board and at Outreach program gatherings.

Between Advent and Christmas, Task Force members and other carolers, furthering Grace Church’s music ministry, take a sleigh ride with Santa to the Infectious Disease Unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital to bring holiday cheer and the message of Christmas to AIDS patients and hospital staff.

The bi-annual AIDS Task Force Variety show, showcasing many talents of Grace Church members and friends, brings in funding for ministries around the world and awareness to our local congregation.

Financial Support:  Extending our reach-out to include raising financial support, we proudly put on the AIDS Task Force Variety Show – with proceeds benefitting local and global AIDS service programs.  Our ministry focus on World AIDS day (or the Sunday worship service closest to December 1) also contributes to the global AIDS mission by message and plate offerings.  We also gladly support again this year, the Ride for the Feast – raising money for Moveable Feast programs and services.

Volunteer Activities:   The Task Force arranges for Grace Church visits to provide volunteer support to our service provider partners.
